Ferberizing the “baby”

The past couple of weeks have been very exhausting. Between fighting off a cold/sinus infection that refuses to go away and Avery deciding that she would like her feet rubbed in the middle of the night I am a walking zombie. It seems like every time Avery sleeps I am awake with a cough or just a general feeling of crappiness. I cannot shake this cold for long so I am giving in and going to the Doctor tomorrow. I am sure I will find out I have some debilitating condition or cancer. Or the dreaded words “You have a virus.”

Let’s move on to Avery. Avery has this condition called I like to mess with my parents. For the past week or so off and on she has been running into our room in the early morning hours and wants us to rub her feet, hold her hand and general cuddling. The first couple of nights I fell for it. Of course I was thinking things like maybe she is sick or her stomach hurts. Then I got wise to her scheme. It happened one night as we were laying on the couch and I was trying to get her to go back to sleep. I turned on Modern Family because I was sick of listening to the clock tick. (We always end up with really loud clocks) I so happened to turn on the episode where Mitchell and Cam are “ferberizing” the baby. (Letting the baby cry it out) In the episode Mitchell is pretty much forcing Cam to do this while Cam lays sobbing in bed listening to Lily cry. I would do the same thing when we tried to let Avery cry it out before. There were other scenes in the episode that resonated with me. Like Cam sitting up with Lily and watching t.v. Ahem. So I decided it was time to “ferberize” my “baby” Avery was put in bed with her nightlight on gave her Deema doll and shut the door. She proceeded to cry like we were pulling her fingernails off one at a time. This went on for about an hour or so. She would take small breaks and I could hear books being looked through and toys being played with. Then she decided to try and violently open her door. She is not quite strong enough yet to open the door but she will twist and turn the handle like a mad woman. That drove me insane so I went downstairs. The noise must have finally woke husband up because he came running downstairs desperate for a nuk. In the past he has been the one that wanted Avery to cry it out but I guess he changed his tune. So he sat up and rubbed her feet and did all of the other things that she needed to fall back asleep. Blurg. Now they are both against me. Fast forward a couple of nights and we are back in the same boat. But this time something magical happened. I put Avery in her room and she actually fell asleep. I woke up a couple of hours later in amazement that she was still sleeping. I really thought I had something until this morning. Avery woke up just in time for what she thought would be a spa day/night. You know getting her feet rubbed, etc. I had other plans. Avery went back into her bedroom where I thought she would be a good little girl and fall asleep to the trance of her nightlight. Not so fast mom. It was the whole crying scene over again topped off with trying to escape her bedroom jail. Finally it was time for me to get up anyway so I paid the price and bailed her out of her bedroom jail.

You would think this is where out story ends but it’s only just beginning folks. I am still going to try and “ferberize” the “baby” but with a twist. I am going to exhaust her until she can’t keep her little eyes open anymore. My first step was to take her to the arboretum this morning for her first official hike. We had a lot of fun and she started yawning half-way through the hike. Score! Well, it wasn’t much of a hike but I have to say she did really good and had lots of fun 🙂 I guess you will have to stay tuned for tonight’s results.

Ahhh Hiking

Finally the weather is cooperating and I have been able to get a couple hikes in. I guess mother nature didn’t like seeing me in my workout shorts because we are due for rain/freezing rain/sleet/snow or whatever else can come out of the sky later today. Sorry mother nature, if you would let me get outside I would maybe look a little better 😉 Anyway, it was so nice to get outside and get some hiking in. I knew I missed hiking but I didn’t realize how much until I got to do it again. We have been getting a couple walks in too. Usually the walks are short because Avery is with and it doesn’t take her long to wonder into someone’s yard or just plain get sick of walking. Can’t really blame the gal but it is nice for her to get out too so we walk around the block and come home.

With this time of the year comes ice jams and huge chunks of ice on the shorelines. Of course I snapped a couple of pics of some ice for you all to enjoy. I didn’t get a chance to get any pics of the big ice jam this year but you will get the just of it. Since I am still dealing with a really annoying head cold I am going to cut this one short and let you enjoy the pics I did take. Once this cold is gone (which better be soon) I will get back to blogging more and hopefully cleaning my house too. I felt good enough to hike today for a little while and go on a short walk and now I am back to feeling like a zombie. I am sure if you would have seen me hiking today you would have wondered why I was outside. Between sneezing breaks and clearing my nose breaks I probably looked pretty silly. Don’t worry I took my used Kleenex’s home to dispose of them. I did see used Kleenex on the trails (Eww)

If you have a chance get out and enjoy this weather! If any of you have any pics of the great outdoors feel free to share them. You can share them with me on my Facebook page (Welcome to my World), the twitter (tweet to @6480Autumn) or on here. I love to see what everyone’s world looks like 🙂

Last weekend hiking before the big sickness 🙂
River is open!! (For now)

Sun! Beautiful Sun!

Yes, finally the sun has graced us with its beautiful presence. I honestly cannot remember the last time we saw the sun. Some people are saying three weeks; some say four. Whichever one it is; it has been way to long. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I woke up this morning and spied the sun coming up. Anyway, of course I took in a hike with personal trainer this morning and it was wonderful. It actually feels like the middle of March instead of late December. As of right now it is 41 degrees outside!!!! Since I took a couple of days off from working out it was so nice to get back at it today. When I felt like quitting I envisioned all of those sweets I took in and kept trudging along 😉 Of course I took some pictures to share. I hope you enjoy them and I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!!

Ice kinda looks like pizza. Makes it hard to workout when nature makes pizza…..

Winter Hiking

Since this hasn’t been a typical winter in Wisconsin I have been able to continue hiking. Good thing for me because I love hiking but it also stinks because I have only used my snowshoes once. It’s like mother nature was like “Oh she got snowshoes let’s make it rain” I am also hoping the sun comes out soon and I am sure everyone else in Wisconsin is hoping for the same. I seriously cannot remember the last time the sun was out. There were a couple peeks over the weekend but that’s about it. Anyway I have been able to capture some pictures of our Wisconsin winter or lack there of; that I would love to share. Just a reminder I am not the best photographer 😉

Walkin’ in a not so winter wonderland

If you are from Wisconsin or anywhere in the Midwest you know that we usually have quite a bit of snow by this time of the year. Not this year. We are actually due for some rain this weekend and highs in the 40’s.(Of course the first year of being a snowshoe owner we have above normal temps) Since the weather is not so frightful it brings some opportunity. Personal trainer said he had went in my beloved arboretum for a hike with no snowshoes and it was really nice. (I am already sick of watching the minutes tick by on the elliptical.) So I suggested we go together tonight.

At 4:15 we were off. We didn’t have too much daylight left but since there is some snow left it did provide some light for us and we were able to hike for 45 minutes! I am not sure what is harder hiking with shoes on in the snow or snowshoes. Probably shoes. Anyway it was a good workout and would have been better if I had brought Kleenex. (Don’t worry I won’t give any of the details of my Kleenex problem so you can keep reading.) It ended with no ER visit or bruises so I am going to call it a good day 😉

I gained some knowledge in the arboretum tonight. Probably obvious knowledge to the regular person but new to me. Or maybe I should just call it a revelation? Anyway, I realized that since there is snow on the ground I can now see tracks of animals and people. So now I will know if there are cougars, mice, bobcats or psycho killers following me. I assume that psycho killers wear boots so if I see boot tracks I will know to exit. (Unless it’s the Amish kids again; they wear boots too) If you did not realize this fact consider yourself dropped with my knowledge.

If you have the opportunity to get out on a nice day during the winter I totally recommend it.

Kinda frozen river

Winter is here. Blah. The snow is pretty but it’s a lot prettier on December 20 than it is on November 14. We had our first snowstorm Tuesday; luckily it wasn’t as bad as they were predicting for our area but I think we got enough. Of course it rained before it snowed. Another cruel joke by mother nature.

On Saturday personal trainer and I hurried out for our last hike of the season. If you ask us it was a three-mile hike. If you ask my fitness app it was nine miles and we burned 1,200 calories. My app would not pause or turn off so it recorded our hike and most of our drive home. UGH! Besides the technology error it was a good hike. No mice or cougars were spotted but I did see a place where cougars could hide very easily and stalk me if I looked good enough to eat.

I was sad to think our hikes were coming to an end when personal trainer invited me on a new adventure. Snowshoeing!! With a new adventure comes a new fear, bobcats. Yikes! I guess I kinda forgot about them but I was reminded with a picture I saw on Facebook. A good thing about winter is things are more visible. So if I am being stalked by a predator whether it be human or animal I will be able to see them better.

Today was the big day, my first snowshoeing experience. I really thought I would be writing this post from the ER because I had broken limbs but I am sitting very comfortably on my couch. Yay me!! Anyway, personal trainer arrived at 9:30 to watch Avery so I could try snowshoeing. I borrowed his in case I did get scarred for life and didn’t want to go again. After a couple of tutorials on how to put them on I was off to my favorite hiking destination. I parked and got out of my car fully confident I could strap these things to my boots. I was wrong once again. I had a hard time getting the dang things to strap on. I think I got more of a workout trying to get them on then actually snowshoeing. There I was bent over in the parking lot when suddenly I realized my back was really cold. My lower back actually if you catch my drift. So there I was bent over in a parking lot on a busy highway with my lower back hanging out. One positive for me is that my pants are too big for me. One negative for the unsuspecting motorists traveling today was they had to see my lower back. I should tell everyone that hasn’t been snowshoeing before that getting them on isn’t that hard. I am just not really good at anything 😉

On to the actual snowshoeing. I really enjoyed it. It was so nice to get out after being cooped up in the house this past week. I was still scared of predators and of clumsiness but other than that it was great. I had planned on having my iPod with to listen to some Rhi Rhi and my other workout jams but after the struggle getting the dang snowshoes on, I realized Rhi Rhi had to stay in the car. Too dangerous for a first time snowshoe r. Of course I snapped some pics of my adventure today. I was a little nervous to go off the beaten path to get some really good pics but I ended up getting off of the path without realizing it. I have a wonderful sense of direction 😉 If you are thinking about snowshoeing I would highly recommend it. It’s a great workout during the winter when you get sick of the elliptical or treadmill.
