What I am doing in the bathroom

Don’t worry this post does not describe any disgusting bathroom stories. But I am going to talk about the bathroom and if that makes you queasy maybe move along to another post or come back tomorrow 😉

I am going to make an admission here that I have not made to anyone except close friends and confidants. I am not always going to the bathroom when I am in the bathroom. Sometimes a girl just needs some alone time and the confines of the bathroom is the only place I seem to get it some days. Sure there are the occasional times I get alone time in the morning when everyone else is sleeping or at night when everyone else is sleeping. See the trend here? I like sleep and the only time I get alone time is when everyone else is and I would like to join them. So the only place I am left with is the bathroom.

I get asked at least once or twice a week what I am doing in the bathroom. I never wanted to admit what I was doing in there because then the jig would be up. But I really have no choice because they won’t leave me alone. Whether it’s knocking on the door or talking about my bathroom time. This afternoon we had to have a half-hour long discussion on what I do in the bathroom. Husband brought it up (he may be tricking me here which he loves to do) but he always alludes to the fact that I have potty problems. Maybe I do but it’s really none of his business. Today he asked again “What do you do in there?” I of course replied with “None of your business; why do you keep asking?” He replied with “Sometimes I worry that something happened to you in there because you are gone for so long.” Just a little dramatic. I said something to the effect of “Just leave me alone unless you hear a thud in there; then come because something is wrong.” I got an eye roll. Then he says “You really want me to leave you alone unless you fall on the ground?” “Yup that’s what I said.”

With the invention of the smart phone and iPod it makes it very easy to spend countless minutes passing time away in the bathroom. Of course magazines and newspapers work too but they are so bulky. Smartphones and iPods can be hidden very easily. Plus it is really hard to go on Pinterest when all I have is a newspaper. I know you are wondering “How in the world does she go to the bathroom without a child getting to her?” The answer is this-baby gate. Ah yes the baby gate for now keeps her out of the upstairs bathroom. Of course this only works when someone is downstairs to keep an eye on her. that is where husband and/or step-son come into play. When they are home I have the freedom to hide from everyone for a minute.

Yes, it is true I take electronics into the bathroom and hide from my family. Did they trick me into admitting this? Probably. Am I going to regret admitting this? You bet. Is there anyone else out there like me? If you say no I will probably tell you to shut your little mouth because I know better. So that my friends is what I am doing in the bathroom.

Sisterhood of the world bloggers award

Oh my gosh I received another award!! So awesome 🙂 You would think that third time would be a charm and I would have that dress but unfortunately no I do not. I would like to thank Tiny Expats for the award! Definitely go and check her out! She has a very awesome and unique blog. Oh and she is from the Ukraine so she is doubly awesome!!

Just a little background on these awards. Of course it is an honor to be nominated first and foremost. To me it means someone really thinks you are doing a great job. The second factor is that your readers get to know you a little more by answering the questions you are given. I always enjoy answering the questions 🙂 The third factor is the exposure. Not only for your own blog but for the blog that nominated you and the blogs that you nominate. Whether we know it or not we have touched someone’s life somehow. It may be to relate to others through our own experiences or droppin’ a little knowledge 🙂 I have found so many great blogs through posts just like mine about awards.

On to the burning questions that I am happy to answer:

  1. Who is the person that inspired you the most? Why? I am going to steal from Tiny Expats and go with my grandparents on this one. Both sets of my grandparents were farmers. They worked very hard for what they had and were always there for all of their grandchildren. I was very young when my both of my grandfather’s passed away so I don’t remember too much about them. I was lucky enough to have both of my grandmother’s into my early twenties. Both of them showed me what unconditional love means ❤
  2. Where do you source your inspiration from whether it be in life or writing? A lot of my inspiration comes from my own life experiences. For some reason working out (especially hiking) inspires me to write. Double positive inspiration and wellness 🙂
  3.  If you could be any animal, what would it be and why? Do I even have to answer? Of course a cat. What a great life. They sleep 22 hours a day (at least mine does) Food is always aplenty and their toilets are always cleaned for them 😉
  4. Where is the place you feel the most content and what is it about this place that inspires that feeling? I would have to say at home or with family and friends. I have always felt most comfortable at home or with people I enjoy being with. Having visitors at our home is the best!
  5. What is your favorite color and how does it inspire you? This one is always hard for me. I would say black for clothes because I am always trying to give the illusion I am smaller than I really am. I am really into decorating with grey and white right now. I do decorate a lot with black too. Since I am still able to pick out Avery’s decorations we use a lot of lavender and white for her room.
  6.  If you could keep only five possessions what would they be? Gah! This one is hard as well. First would be Mason’s things. His pictures, hand and footprints and the molds of his hands. Then it would be my china hutch that my dad built for my Grandma. Third would be the butter dish that my Grandma gave my parents for their wedding. Fourth would be Avery’s baby book. Last but not least my rings. I only have two; my mother’s ring and my engagement ring and wedding band. I know technically that is more than five but I am cheating and grouping them into categories 😉
  7. What is your favorite memory and how has it inspired who you are today? Oh my there are so many! If I had to pick one it would be when I found out I was pregnant with Mason. It reminds me to never give up and keep pursuing my dreams. He gave our family so much hope and love even though we only had him for a short time ❤ I can honestly say that I remember the exact feeling when I heard those words “Autumn, you are pregnant.” Mason inspires me everyday to be a better person and enjoy life 🙂
  8. Name the food that makes you the happiest and why? Well, lately I would have to say coffee. It makes me happy because it keeps me awake. But I have to give a shout out to my lifelong friend Sprite 😀
  9. What is the last book that you read and how did it make you feel? I wish I could say I have read another book since the last time I answered this question but I have not. So I have to go with my old standby which is BossyPants by Tina Fey. Of course it was hilarious and put me in a great mood!
  10. What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now? Oh jeez! I guess if I took a gander in my crystal ball I would have to say blogging. I have never enjoyed something so much besides becoming a mother. In a perfect world I would be blogging and taking care of my family 🙂

Alright done with Q&A section of this post. On to the cheating portion. Yup I am going to cheat. Since I am such a newbie to the blogging world I am going to nominate as many blogs as I can think of. (I am to nominate seven; but I don’t think I will come up with that many.)

Done with the cheating portion; on to the questions. Sorry I couldn’t come up with more 😦 If I do (which I am sure I will) come across more awesome blogs I will add them and re-post 🙂

10 burning questions for the nominees:

  1. If you had the opportunity to donate what or who would you donate to and why?
  2. What is your favorite season and why?
  3. Who is your favorite author?
  4. Early bird or night owl?
  5. Favorite dessert
  6. Describe your perfect day from start to finish
  7. What is your dream job?
  8. What is your favorite thing about blogging?
  9. Favorite movie
  10. Warm or cold climate?

Here are the rules for the nominees:

– Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site.
– Put the award logo on your blog.
– Answer the ten questions sent to you.
– Make up ten new questions for your nominees to answer.
– Nominate seven blogs.

I would like to thank tiny expats again for the award and I can’t wait for the nominees to answer their questions. If you have a chance stop over and check the nominees out. You won’t be disappointed 🙂 Thank you all for reading!! Without you I would never have a chance for an award 🙂

Why I love The One Spot at Target

A couple of months back I spotted an article that was pretty much dissing The One Spot at Target. It was like a knife through my little heart for lack of a better phrase. I love The One Spot. It is a wonderful spot in Target that is strategically placed in front of a set of doors to welcome you when you walk in with its cute merchandise and low prices. Sometimes when the Gods shine down you can spot an extra savings on your Cartwheel app and save even more! Most items are of course $1.00 but there are also items for $3.00 and $5.00.

In the article I spotted things like “Filled with items you don’t really need.” or “Cheaply made products.” Oh my! I couldn’t disagree more. I have purchased many things that I need and they are definitely not cheaply made. I have always made it clear that I am obsessed in love with Target but The One Spot is my absolute fave!

From time to time I have some little’s that join our craziness when they have off from school. I always hit up The One Spot before they come because they have tons of cute craft items and inexpensive coloring books. For example around Christmas time I purchased foam trees and ornaments to decorate with cute foam stickers. The little’s loved them and so did I!  When I made that wonderful trip I also picked up some nice bags to put Christmas presents in. No ladies and gents they were not your typical Christmas bags. They were Frozen and Transformers reusable bags; cool, cute and functional. Needless to say our gifts were a hit! On a recent Target trip I picked up some awesome Leap Frog flashcards and learning books for Avery. Some of them are for future use and some for now. I have found countless other awesome items at The One Spot that I still use today 🙂

I can honestly say that none of the items I have purchased are cheaply made and trust me I needed all of them 🙂 Since my little heart was crushed when I saw that article I knew I had to do something. That is where this post comes from. Not that I am retaliating I just felt that the general public deserved to know how wonderful The One Spot is 🙂

I cannot even believe I am saying this; but this ladies and gents is my 100th blog post!! Cue streamers and balloons. I really never thought I would make it to 100. I also never thought I would write 100 posts in five short months of blogging. I have learned so much since those early days of blogging. There is much more to learn and hopefully there will be some new and exciting things happening soon 😉 I wish I could say that I have a cool giveaway or something but wait; maybe I do. To the 50th person that reads this post they get; wait for it…. a brand new car!! Come on down for nothing. Because I have nothing. Sorry guys I am not cool enough for giveaways yet. Maybe in the near future. Check back at 120 or 130 to see what I have in store.

All kidding aside I want to thank all of you for reading, sharing and commenting on my blog posts, Facebook page, following me on Pinterest and even the Twitter. Can you believe I have 76 followers on the Twitter? For someone who still doesn’t know what the what they are doing I consider 76 to be a great number! I also gained another follower on Tumblr which brings me up to four!! I will give you a little stats knowledge about my blog. Since September I have had 3,471 views of my blog. My best day ever in the words of Rapunzel was 185 views!! There are tons of other stats that may bore you all a little (but are exciting to me) so I will spare you the short snooze and move on.

Before I exit I again want to thank you all for reading about our adventure we call life. As we are learning the ropes of our new “normal” I thank you all for coming along for the ride. I do have some exciting things to share in the upcoming days, weeks and months so stay tuned!! Of course I have some great posts on the back burner so check back for those guys too 🙂 Now that I am back up to full strength computer wise thanks to computer guy I can start accomplishing some goals that I have been working on so watch out world! Not to sound too sappy but this blog really was a wonderful dream of mine and all of you are helping to make that dream come true so I really can’t thank you all enough!!

From the kitchen of the casserole queen: Potato Soup Edition

It’s been a while since I have done a recipe post. Someone informed me that my recipe posts are not my best work. That person shall remain nameless (husband) Anyway, we are finally back on track with our furnace after three days in a row of messing with it. Must be that third time is a charm thing because this morning we woke up with heat and it was wonderful. I am not sure who it affected most but if I had to guess I would say Percy. He has been a mess since the whole furnace debacle. Luckily the gentlemen that worked on it on Saturday didn’t mind having a slightly overweight cat supervising him. The basement is Percy’s layer and he was sick of sharing it. I told the guy that he could move Percy or let me know and I would remove him. I guess he did it himself because Percy was full of black fingerprints 😉

Percy Cold edited

Anyway with all of this cold weather I have really been wanting some soup; so I decided to whip up some potato soup in the crock pot today. It is super easy and so good. Of course there are always plenty of leftovers so you can get out of cooking during the week. This would be one that you could start before work and finish when you get home because it can spend some time in the crock pot without overcooking. Even in my super-human crock pot I have never had a problem. This is a super easy recipe to add ingredients to and as always not very time-consuming.

7 potatoes peeled and diced

2 carrots peeled and diced

5 cups of Chicken Broth

1 Bay Leaf

1 tablespoon Parsley

1 package Cream Cheese

6 strips of cooked bacon

First peel and slice your potatoes and carrots. Throw them in the crock pot on low with the chicken broth, bay leaf and parsley. I leave it in the crock pot for at least six hours if not longer. Today I had it in the crock pot for seven hours and it tasted great! When the time is up put a softened package of cream cheese in the crock pot and stir. After the cream cheese goes in it is bacon time. Then you are set to enjoy this creamy goodness! I have added my favorite food in the whole world, corn to this recipe and it was divine 🙂

A little known fact about me I am terrified of getting things in my eyes. I used to wear sunglasses every time I fried bacon for fear of grease getting in my eyes. I would still wear them but someone gives me grief about it (husband) Ah the things we do for love 😉

I hope you enjoy this recipe and as always if you do try this warm creamy goodness let me know what you think!

Be happy with what you did get done today

Since I have not been getting much done around the house lately or blogging due to our furnace issues I thought it was a good day to share my third article I wrote for Moms Magazine 🙂 You can find it here http://momsmagazine.com/2015/01/21/happy-get-done-today/ I think after two days of furnace issues we are finally going to be in a nice warm home again. Which is awesome news since the high on Sunday is going to be 3. Just a little background on our furnace issues we had it cleaned yesterday and today we woke up to a balmy 62 degrees ;( Luckily we were able to go to personal trainer’s while it was being repaired. Avery never felt the cold due to her nice warm flannel sheets 🙂 Those sheets are one of the best investments I have made for her and I have to admit I am a little jelly of them. If I find some on clearance this spring I will be purchasing some. Of course we had to keep our little Percy warm during the furnace issues. Don’t worry I will give you a visual. I would have loved to take Percy with us but personal trainer does not live in a Percy friendly home 😉 Anyway I am hoping after a nap I can get some stuff done around here and get caught up on some blogging.

My poor Percy kitten all cuddled up 😉

Oh the weather outside

Stinks. That’s it; it just stinks. This post is going to be really whiney so if you are not in the mood for that maybe turn around and come back tomorrow when I think it is supposed to be 19 degrees above 0. If you are in the mood to listen to my gripes have a seat and get comfy.

As of right now the temperature here is -8 but with the wind chill it feels more like -20 to -30 below. Ugh. If it was January this would be somewhat acceptable but it is February 19 and I will not have this type of weather anymore. Do I have a choice? Heck no! Am I going to whine when it is super hot and humid this summer? You bet! Usually I deal with the weather because we experience all four seasons here and usually to the extreme. But in the past 24 hours we have had some happenings that I blame solely on the weather.

One would think you could turn the faucet on and water would come out; not last night. Pipes were frozen again. I learned my lesson from last time and I made sure to run the water periodically in said sink yesterday so this wouldn’t happen. I guess that wasn’t enough. Husband went upstairs to unfreeze the pipe with my blow dryer; soon after he came back downstairs with some bad news. The pipe was still frozen and my blow dryer became a victim of this cold weather. RIP Conair blow dryer from I would have to say circa 2002? It was a very faithful friend but it couldn’t withstand two pipes freezes in a row. So at 8:00 p.m. I was running off to get a new blow dryer and milk. In the end the pipe is unfrozen and mama has a new blow dryer with a diffuser!!

Last night we also decided that we should have our furnace cleaned. So I was to call the guy today. Husband had informed me that they would need to shut the furnace off so I should crank it up before they came so it would stay warm in here. I figured it would be a couple of days before they could come since it isn’t an emergency. When I called this morning they said they could actually come in a half-hour. Awesome until I looked at my house. Avery was still in her pj’s and I had tons of dishes. Oh and I forgot to clean the kitty box last night that is located in the basement. Crap. Literally crap. I first cranked up the heat as I was instructed then headed down to the basement for a quick clean of the kitty box. I swept up any litter that had spilled out because my dear Percy loves to kick a little litter out and then I sprayed the box with his cleaner so it would smell fresh. I decided to leave Avery in her fuzzy pj’s since they are so warm and I quickly did the dishes. I even fit in a little vacuuming. After all of that running around I realized it is downright balmy in here. How high did I turn up the thermostat? The guy is still here so we will see what happens there. We can never simply call the guy without something else happening. Usually husband is the guy but he is stuck working overtime outside in this bitter cold.

This morning when I was sleepily digging in the refrigerator for my milk I noticed that my hand had actually taken a dip in a small pool. Blurg. The fridge is leaking from some unknown place. This time I called personal trainer. After waking him up (Ah the retirement life) he informed me that he really doesn’t know too much about refrigerators but that I probably need to defrost it or worse. I blame this on this weather too.

Last but certainly not least my iPod quit today. I got the dreaded “black screen” I was literally just using it minutes before. So I decided to text step-son since he is the proud owner of an iPod to ask him what the what happened. He informed me that it needed to be charged and if that didn’t work then the iPod was beyond repair. Well, that was like taking a knife to the heart. I told him that I definitely had enough battery and his text back stated “I don’t know what else to tell u.” He doesn’t mess around when it comes to giving someone bad news 😉 I know I probably sound like a teenager when it comes to my iPod but I am a teenager when it comes to my iPod. My iPod is my life; it is way cooler than my phone and it has all of my favorite music. As of 10:10 I am still looking at a black screen and it has been charging since 7:30. Another victim of this weather.

I know you are probably all thinking “It could be a lot worse for you lady.” I know it could, but I think all of this being cooped up in the house is bringing me down. So I am going to try to look at the bright side. The tax fairy should be coming soon. Instead of getting that bright and shiny new camera I wanted I might be looking at a new refrigerator instead. Or a repair at least. With all of the banging going on in the basement I wonder if there is more going on down there than just a cleaning. But the good thing is that the tax fairy is on her way and husband is working so we will have a nice warm house and cool refrigerated items. I am not giving up on my precious iPod just yet. I still want to be a cool dudette with my iPod 😉  I looked ahead to the March forecast and it looks like around March 10 it might be 40 degrees. Oh the weather outside…..

Why do I live somewhere that you have to dress like this to spend time outside?

The day I wore jeans

Today started out most like any other morning. Got up in a sleep deprived haze because I fell asleep in my daughter’s bed (again) and went to closet to pick out clothes. But that’s when this day became different. I decided to wear jeans. I guess the secret is out; I wear comfy cotton pants pretty much everyday. Not because I am just plain lazy (maybe a little) but because I live with a toddler. I think when I do put on jeans a little alarm goes off in her head and it says “She just put the jeans on; it’s go time.”  See I only have two pairs of jeans. I am in the midst of my weight loss journey and my punishment to myself is that I am not allowed to buy new clothes until I get to a weight I feel more comfortable with. I did lose enough to fit into an old pair of jeans so that’s how I ended up with two pairs. I had to break down and buy one pair because I felt the need to have one on hand.

My jeans were unharmed for about three hours this morning which is pretty good for them. But then it all went downhill when Avery’s feet hit the floor. I went up to her room to get her and she was playing so nice after she got up that I decided to stay in there with her. I guess I was not doing exactly what she wanted because the tugging started. She wanted to show me something in her closet. After the tugging on my precious jeans she went to my shirt because that must be the natural order. We proceeded downstairs for an oatmeal breakfast. It was going well at first until Avery discovered that she had some oatmeal on her shirt. In the blink of an eye that oatmeal ended up on my pants. Not that oatmeal stains or anything but it has a certain look about it especially after it dries. Oatmeal closely resembles boogers when it is dry. Maybe not exact but definitely in the booger family. I once thought it would be safe to go out in public without checking myself over and when I came home I discovered oatmeal on my shirt that from far away looked boogerish.

Fast forward to snack time. I cut up some apples for us to share and for some reason I figured my jeans would come out unharmed. Apple slices were being eaten at a rapid pace and I was pleased to see Avery was eating so many. When the bowl was empty I got up to put it away when I realized why the apples were being downed so quickly. Apparently today Avery doesn’t like the skin of the apple so she ate the guts and left the skins and some other apple parts on the floor. Blurg. Of course this all happened on the dang maroon carpet. After wiping up the carnage I stood up and realized I had missed some and it was stuck to the knee of my jeans. Sticky, half-eaten apple parts all over my jeans!

An interesting fact regarding my jeans. I do not put them in the dryer like ever. Husband did once and he will never forget it. So when my jeans get washed it is a two-day process. They go in the washer for a nice cold water bath. Then they come out immediately and get hung up in a nice sunny spot to dry before they get put away with their other jean friends. So when they are both dirty we have a situation.

I should have learned my lesson from the last time I wore jeans on a day we were not going out and about. It was a day much like today. Everything was normal until Avery’s alarm went off alerting her that I was putting jeans on. We ate a lunch of peanut butter sandwiches that day. Since she is so picky sometimes we just share sandwiches. Anyway, Avery came running up to me and before I could stop her she wiped the palms of her hands all over my pants; then she turned those suckers around and wiped the backs off too. Did I mention they were full of peanut butter? Ugh. Oh and I can’t forget last week when she was fighting a little bug. Besides wearing her like a t-shirt I was also her human Kleenex. Isn’t it funny how she hates getting her nose wiped by an actual Kleenex but she enjoys wiping her nose on my clothes? I truly do feel bad for her when she is sick and her nose is running like a faucet. I just wish she would wait the one second for the Kleenex to do the wiping. Can’t forget the Popsicle; oh I could go for days.

Have I learned my lesson now? Probably not. After the washer is done humming with our bedding my jeans will go for a dip in their cold water bath and the comfy pants will slide on. Maybe we should have taken a hint from when Avery was little and would spit-up constantly. So much that sometimes we would have to change our clothes as well as hers. I wish I could find that alarm….

Back when we could strap Avery in and she couldn’t get to our clothes 😉

Why I’m Still Co-Sleeping with my Daughter

I felt it was appropriate to share this one this morning since I woke up in my daughter’s bed at 4:00 a.m. Blurg. I was super tired and it is so warm in there with her flannel sheets 😉 Anyway, I have had some articles in Moms Magazine and my latest is titled Why I’m Still Co-Sleeping With My Daughter. You can find it here momsmagazine.com/2015/02/09/why-im-still-co-sleeping-with-my-daughter Kind of a hot topic right now. But really what isn’t a hot topic in this parenting world? If you have a little time on your hands today stop and check me out 🙂

I would have to take ridiculous amounts of ibuprofen and use all of the Icy-Hot in my cabinet if I fell asleep like this 😉
